This research looks at several plays and their film adaptions that use humor or comic elements to explore Holocaust themes. Specifically, it examines the various ways in which they employ humor and the effect it has on the viewer. It uses comedy theory and Holocaust drama theory as well as performance reviews to raise questions about the ethical dimension of the use of humor and comedy when creating performance pieces that comment on the Holocaust. Most prior Holocaust drama research has included comedies as part of a larger, more general body of plays but have not looked solely at the effects of the generic properties of comedy in Holocaust theatre and film. This research highlights the positive effects of humor in these works, determining that its use can be as effective, intelligent and ethical as the tonally serious.
