As the United States (U.S.) explores ways to improve the health of its population and reduce the rising cost of healthcare, occupational therapy has an opportunity to influence and practice in the field of population health. Concurrently, the transition to the Doctorate of Occupational Therapy (OTD) level of education has introduced new accreditation standards related to population health as a requirement for occupational therapy educators. The integration of population health concepts into an OTD curriculum is necessary meet these new standards and to support this emerging practice area for occupational therapy. This qualitative study explored the ways that OTD programs and transitioning OTD programs are integrating population health into their curriculum. Data were provided through semi-structured interviews with educators of accredited OTD programs, educators of programs seeking OTD accreditation, and a convenience sample of population health faculty members. Analysis of the data resulted in the emergence of four major themes related to the incorporation of population health concepts into an OTD curriculum. The first theme identified was the need for concept development through population health threading in many courses, expanding the students' knowledge of intervention from individual approaches to broader populations, and identifying health promotion and prevention as a treatment strategy. Secondly, the need for faculty development was identified so that population health could effectively be integrated thoroughly into existing programs. Thirdly, OTD programs must identify ways to collaborate across disciplines and with external agencies to provide opportunities for students to practice in population health. Finally, the applicable learning synthesis strategies identified for population health involve more experiential learning with the capstone project easily applicable. A framework for integrating population health within occupational therapy education was designed.
