Transgender individuals are overrepresented in correctional populations but many facilities do not have policies or procedures in place to properly and ethically house or treat them. Even when there is proper assessment and placement, transgender inmates are more susceptible to abuse by other inmates as well as staff. The purpose of this curriculum is to create a one-day training to educate correctional staff in understanding transgender concerns and how these concerns affect the institution as a whole. This training will not only be beneficial to the current or future transgender individuals housed within the correctional facility but would also benefit the institution in which the training is being delivered by way of understanding ways to reduce litigation and other costs. The objective is to assist the facility in educating the staff regarding transgender concerns as well as beginning the conversation and implementation of policy and procedures within their individual system. The training includes a pre-and posttest and will cover: an assessment of current agency culture, basic transgender education, legal issues, medical and mental health concerns, assessment, classification and placement, benefits to the institution and a wrap-up.
