This dissertation explores the emergence of militant film culture in Spain from 1966 to 1982, in a context of increasing unrest and political struggle during the final years of the Franco dictatorship and the Transition to democracy. The tactical appropriation of substandard film technologies allowed anti-Franco activists to operate outside commercial cinema circuits subject to state censorship, while in the process consolidating self-managed structures for film production, distribution, and exhibition. Drawing on extensive archival research, oral interviews, and original translations of primary sources, I analyze individual films but also specialized film literature and manifestoes, film festivals, film cooperatives, clandestine and semi-clandestine distribution platforms, film clubs, and nontheatrical exhibition spaces. Moving away from the tendency to analyze this period of Spanish history within a framework premised on exceptionalism, I chart a transnational network of personal, aesthetic, and political connections that, in the larger context of the cycle of struggles of 1968, linked local militant film practices with international developments. Specifically, I focus on the crucial impact of thirdworldism and the reception of Italian radical filmic-political models in Spain. I also propose that the articulation of militant film culture and political dissidence cannot be reduced to the analysis of individual films in search of indexical representations of conflicts or illustrations of political positions. Rather, I argue that militant film culture was both a cause and a consequence of the emergence of new political subjectivities in a context marked by accelerated urban, social, and ideological transformations. In particular, I contend that the constellation of practices that articulated militant film culture constitutes an advantageous standpoint from which to glimpse the emergence of underrepresented and insurrectional social figures including shantytown dwellers, radicalized students, rebellious peasants, empowered housewives, strikers and other dissidents protesting industrial discipline.
