The gaming literature is currently divided between two competing theories - that playing video games inhibits individuals' ability to interpersonally connect with others versus that playing video games can actually help with developing social aptitude. There are many versions of games one can play, yet there have not been many comprehensive studies on specific game genres, such as massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). This study used an online survey to examine the interpersonal problems, empathic qualities, temperamental characteristics, and emotional intelligence of 161 individuals who play, on average, ten or more hours of MMORPGs weekly. In contrast to study predictions, hours spent gaming had no main effects for interpersonal problems and values, empathy, or emotional intelligence. Gainers who experienced more alienation, aggression, stress reaction, and negative affect generally showed more interpersonal problems and poorer empathy, poorer interpersonal values, and poorer emotional intelligence. However, individuals with higher levels of orienting sensitivity and absorption showed improved empathic qualities and more communal interpersonal values. These findings can help to better understand the interpersonal profile of the garner, potentially as someone who seeks interpersonal connection, but has more comfort doing so from the alternative pathway of online gaming.
