Recently scholars in rhetoric and writing have begun researching gender and how gender relates to student success composition classes. This thesis uses critical discourse analysis and linguistic markers associated with different genders to examine student interaction with emphasis on gender domination and power inequalities between students of different genders. Data was collected from both face-to-face and online first-year composition classes. The first chapter gives a brief overview of relevant literature and outlines the other chapters, the second chapter describes literature that was researched for the study, and the third chapter lays critical discourse analysis, which was used to analyze the data. The fourth chapter provides analysis on the data collected in the study, the fifth chapter examines the data collected through critical discourse analysis, and the sixth and final chapter details study limitations and future research.
