Thesis (Ph.D.)--The Chinese University of Hong Kong (Hong Kong), 2018.
This dissertation aims to explain the literati's motives behind drama writing following the constant crises and chaotic events during the early Qing period between 1644-1683. It is a remarkable phenomenon that many literati began to use drama as their medium of expression only after the Ming-Qing transition. To examine why drama writing flourished during these forty unsettling years, this dissertation adopts the key concept of "functions" of drama, and explores such a phenomenon from the perspective of the characteristics of the drama genre and from the context of the literati's lives during the dynastic transition.

Excluding "Introduction" and "Conclusion", the four main chapters are divided into three parts: historical plays written by local literati focusing on local events, case studies of six literati playwrights and their works, and the "commercial" plays of Li Yu, the drama critic.

Historical plays could be a means of passionate yet discreet response to the dyanstic transition. However, other than the generally recognized functions such as remembrance, introspection, and education, local literati's historical plays were written for personal, familial, or clan oriented purposes, and were usually painted with regional colours.

Literati works are usually laden with heavy cross references to their lives. Through drama, literati cloaked themselves behind various personae and spoke via their characters the arguments or thoughts they dared not or were unwilling to voice directly. Drama played such an important role in the banquets and social gatherings during this period that other than the generally held view of the text "voicing one's heart," its social functions were much more important for the literati dramatists. When aiming at the general public, literati sought the influence lost with their careers because of the dynastic transition. On the other hand, when performing for elite officials and scholars, drama could be used as a tool for the authors' self-fashioning, self-justifications or personal appeal.

Different from his contemporary literati dramatists discussed above, Li Yu flagrantly stated that he wrote plays to make a living. His works contained elaborately constructed self-images and self-fashioning intended to increase "commercial" value as well as to gain recognition from literati audiences.

A "lyrical response to trauma" during the dynastic transition is the prime theory behind most examinations of early Qing literature. Valid as it may be, given the "performative" characteristic of drama, the motives or "functions" for composing plays during this period were far more diverse.
