The purpose of this dissertation was to determine, by using an empirical mixed methods study, if there was a relationship between the leadership practices of principals and teacher motivation, which leadership practices of principals had a negative or positive impact on teacher motivation, and if teacher motivation varied by school or years of experience. Data were collected from 220 teachers at six public schools using two questionnaires and focus group interviews. Focus groups consisted of three to five teachers from each of the six schools. Analysis of the data indicated a significant relationship between the leadership practices of principals and teacher motivation, leadership practices that had a positive or negative impact on teacher motivation, different levels of teacher motivation disaggregated by school, and levels motivation disaggregated by years of experience. The results of this study were used to create an implementation plan for school principals based on an understanding of the impact of their behavior on teacher motivation. Recommendations for future research include a suggestion to conduct additional studies pertaining to the relationship between teacher motivation and student achievement.
