Thesis (M.S.L.P.)--Misericordia University, 2018.
The purpose of this study was to determine what diagnostic methods voice professionals use when completing a voice evaluation and whether or not level of experience affected their chosen methodology. Forty-nine speech-language pathologists, who work in the field of voice disorders, participated in a web-based survey providing information regarding their experience in the field (years and hours per week), in addition to their preferred diagnostic methodology in the areas of visual perceptual, auditory perceptual, patient perceptual, as well as acoustical, and aerodynamic measures. The results of the study showed that professionals use a wide variety of measures when completing diagnostic voice evaluations. A limited agreement was observed with type of measures within each subcategory as well as with the inclusion of measures across each subcategory. Results also indicated that experience (both years and hours per week) had a varying relationship with the participants' chosen diagnostic procedures. Overall, the following trends were observed: (1) participants with more experience in the field (both years and hours per week) were more likely to report the use of costly measures/procedures (i.e., acoustical and aerodynamic hardware/software, and video stroboscopy), and (2) participants with greater years of experience were more likely to use self-created and/or self-modified auditory perceptual and aerodynamic measures. The varying relationship between experience and the participants' preferred methodology may suggest that there are other internal factors, besides experience, affecting their reasons for choosing their preferred diagnostic methodology.
