The current qualitative study is used to explore the research question, What is the new mother's experience of modern-motherhood? The heuristic research model was used to illuminate those core themes that underlie this experience. The study begins with a review of relevant literature to best conceptualize the experience of motherhood, including the construct of motherhood as a whole, a breakdown of some of the various components that co-create motherhood, and possible internal responses to those expectations and standards inherent in motherhood. In order to address the research question, in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 new mothers. These experiences combined to illuminate four themes, including (a) push and pull of motherhood, (b) enormity of responsibility, with a subtheme of providing for children, (c) external pressure, with subthemes of social media and breastfeeding, and (d) joy. Each theme and subtheme are described in detail, followed by a composite depiction and three individual portraits, as well as a creative synthesis. Lastly, a comparison of the current findings to relevant literature, limitations of the current study, and recommendations for future research are all provided, as well as a summary of the implications and meaning of the current study and personal growth ascertained throughout the research process.
