Women in every industry and from all walks of life are vulnerable to body image concerns. Starting in childhood and continuing through the lifespan, women are bombarded with pressure and messages about their physical appearance. Furthermore, sexism and beauty standards have been shown to play a crucial role in job attainment and career advancement. Research on body image has focused on various subsets of the female population, including ballet dancers and elite athletes. This study used that foundation of data, coupled with a basic understanding of opera history and culture, to inform the question of how female opera singers experience body image in today's society. Using a phenomenological approach, the researcher interviewed six participants. Interviews were analyzed for common themes, ultimately concluding that the participants had shared aspects of their experience of body image in the opera world. These findings not only further research on body image, but offer insight into the rarely-studied world of opera.
