Thesis (M.A.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2017.
This study explores how the artist Edvard Munch portrayed themes of human mortality in the emergence of German Expressionism movement. This research proves that Munch's creativity had a direct correlation with the suffering he experienced through heartbreak, anxiety and death. As Munch worked through his paintings, he used his shapes and colors to depict his most inner being. Even though these themes are personal to Munch, his artworks remain universal. This thesis also provides a concise summary of the social and historical contexts of the beginning of modernization in the twentieth century. Through Munch's artworks the viewer is able to have a transcendent experience.
