This quantitative research study seeks to expand employer perceptions toward hiring formerly incarcerated individuals convicted of drug crimes. Over 700,000 individuals are released from American prisons each year, and approximately 70% are rearrested within three years. Employers are largely reluctant to hire the formerly incarcerated persons based on the existence of a criminal conviction. This research proposes that employer attitudes toward hiring returning citizens differ based on a variety of organizational attributes such as the type of industry, firm ownership structure, size of firm, and the job role or type of position sought by the returning citizen. Previous research has been conducted across the United States that examined employer perceptions toward hiring the formerly incarcerated. A gap in the literature revealed that there are no studies that examined employer willingness to hire, specifically related to central Virginia. This cross-sectional research examined employer willingness to hire individuals convicted of drug crimes in central Virginia. Data from 105 central Virginia businesses owners and hiring managers was collected via an online survey instrument. Findings from this study showed that central Virginia businesses were generally amenable to hiring the formerly incarcerated. However, business owners and hiring managers were slightly more willing to hire returning citizens for unskilled, skilled, and semi-skilled positions over clerical or professional positions. This study found no significant differences between employer willingness to hire and the type of industry, ownership structure, or the size of firm.
