Thesis (M.S.)--University of Nebraska at Omaha, 2018.
We all now live in an age of connected devices that brought a great transformation in the way we behave and interact with the world around us. All the big and small businesses are competing to stay up-to-date with the usage of technology, make use of the data for innovation and growth etc. While doing so, majority of the businesses are failing to detect and defend themselves against the associated cyber security threats. Email still continues to see a strong usage in the business world (and consumers) with around 3.8 billion users. Over 281 billion emails are sent and received each day in 2018 and this is predicted to reach 320 billion by 2021 ("The Radicati Group, Inc." Reports," 2018). Email is still ranked as the #1 medium for hackers to attack users. According to the Palo Alto Networks report in October 2017, phishing has become the most critical concern for many individuals and businesses (" FreeMilk: A Highly Targeted Spear Phishing Campaign," 2017). The phishing is executed by sending an infected email to few users are a large group of users irrespective of where they live, and work and the motive is to access to their confidential information. Giant companies like JP Morgan Chase, eBay and Target have been the victims and they all ended up staining their reputation in addition to losing billions of dollars (" Spear Phishing," 2017). This research discusses the impact of phishing on businesses, investigates what type of individuals are more vulnerable to phishing attacks and the common behavioral patterns of people who are weak in identifying phishing emails.
