For microfinance bank (MFB) to achieve their goals and objectives, sustainable leadership competency trainings and programs must be inculcated into the fabric of MFB's business operations. The study utilized basic qualitative research methodology to explore leadership competencies required by start-up microfinance banks in Lagos, Nigeria to be successful. Participants were drawn from MFBs that have been in existence for more than 5 years in Lagos, Nigeria. The job titles of participants include managers, managing directors, and/or chief executive officers. From the study, 7 themes emerged from the participants' responses, which provided an understanding of the phenomenon. They were further analyzed into 4 major themes and 3 prominent themes. The participants answered each of the 10 interview questions and from the data, the 4 major themes were (a) strategic document/vision, (b) training, (c) customer care, and (d) knowledge. The 3 prominent themes were (a) performance, (b) teamwork, and (c) commitment. The 4 major themes and 3 prominent themes that emerged from the data suggested that these are the leadership competencies needed by microfinance banks manager in Lagos, Nigeria to run an efficient microfinance organization. The participant responses show the interconnectedness of the board, management, industry regulators, and even the customers in helping manager acquired the requisite skill and leadership competences.
