The Dean of Students position is often responsible for major aspects of an institution's student affairs division or operation, including student conduct, housing and residence life, and handling every issue or crisis that may affect a student. Yet, despite these important aspects of the position, deans of students have been rarely studied. The following study addresses this lack of a contemporary examination of the Dean of Students position by examining the competencies, education, and experience needed to be an effective Dean of Students. This examination aims to yield useful information for those aspiring to become a Dean of Students and for those who are developing, supervising, or evaluating deans in the United States.

Through this quantitative study, deans of students throughout the United States rated the importance of the ACPA/NASPA professional competencies, education, and experience in relation to being an effective Dean of Students. Key findings included the top-rated competency areas, educational level, previous experience/responsibilities, and a lack of difference in those ratings based on demographic variables. These findings dispute the often misperceived notion that deans of students are significantly different based on institutional or demographic variables.
