Thesis (Psy.D.)--Alliant International University, 2019.
The role of the law enforcement officer is one that is frequently highlighted today. Yet, the role of the law enforcement officer is not always talked about by law enforcements officers. The purpose of this study was to identify the factors of stress, anxiety and fear within law enforcement officers, given the prevalence of violence, racism and media exposure within current American culture. The variables researched in this study included gender, years of experience as an active duty officer, being fired upon during the line of duty, and admitting fears. The sample size included a total of 93 participants, 30 females and 63 males, active duty law enforcement officers. This study found significance in some of the hypotheses. The first hypothesis found that female officers experiences a higher level of distress than male officers while on duty. There was not a significant difference between male and female officers on the measures of stress, anxiety or fear. The second hypothesis supported the hypothesis that stress, anxiety and fear were not significantly correlated with years of experience on duty. The third hypothesis did not support this hypothesis as officers who were fired upon during the line of duty did not report experiencing a higher level of stress, anxiety and fear. The fourth hypothesis did not find any significant differences. It was surprising to find that the majority of officers were willing to discuss their stress, anxiety and fears with their superiors, colleagues and family or friends. The implications of this study demonstrate the importance and need for research among this specific population. This research has the potential to build community awareness, perspectives, and education while bridging the gap between law enforcement officers and the communities that they serve.
