Thesis (Psy.D.)--John F. Kennedy University, 2018.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to gain a deeper understanding on how police officers' training impacts their attitudes towards sex offenders. The participants consisted of 10 deputies from Alameda County Sheriff's Department located in the San Francisco Bay Area. A conventional content-analysis was used due to the current limited research on this topic. Six themes were derived from the interviews: (1) cursory knowledge about sex offenders before joining law enforcement; (2) attitudes towards sex offenders prior to joining law enforcement; (3) current attitudes towards sex offenders as law enforcement and emotional use of language; (4) limited training on sexual offenders; (5) coping mechanisms for working with sex offenders; and (6) benefits to working with sex offenders. The discussion focused on various contributing factors that may impact one's work and attitudes towards a specific population. Limitations, clinical recommendations, and future research are also discussed.
