This study examined the relationship between disordered eating, social appearance anxiety, and transgender congruence in transgender and cisgender women. There was a total of 94 participants in the study: 30 transgender women and 64 cisgender women, between the ages of 18 and 64. Data was collected online using the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire, the Social Appearance Anxiety Scale, and the Transgender Congruence Scale. The researchers hypothesized that there would be a difference in the rates of disordered eating reported by cisgender participants and transgender participants, that transgender women who reported higher levels of gender congruence would report lower rates of disordered eating, that transgender women would face higher levels of social appearance anxiety than cisgender women, and that there would be a difference in the rates of disordered eating between cisgender women and transgender women after controlling for social appearance anxiety. The results showed that there was no statistically significant difference in the rates of disordered eating reported by cisgender and transgender participants. The results also showed that there was no statistically significant correlation between the level of gender congruence and the level of social appearance anxiety reported by transgender participants. Transgender participants reported a statistically significantly higher level of social appearance anxiety than cisgender participants. Additionally, there was no statistically significant difference in the rates of disordered eating between cisgender and transgender participants after controlling for social appearance anxiety.
