Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of Southern California, 2017.
The purpose of this case study was to gain insight of teachers' perceptions of SteamAheadPrep (SAP), an online teacher professional development program for K-2 teachers to better prepare them to teach using the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). SAP was designed to improve teacher practice, support teacher change, and enhance professional growth. Many reform efforts are centered on teacher training as a mechanism for improving teacher learning. Digital storytelling is an instructional medium that may be used in the K-2 classroom to teach the NGSS. It is a technology application that has benefits for K-2 teachers looking for new and innovative ways of incorporating science and engineering content in their classrooms. For the purpose of this study, K-2 teachers were trained in the use of digital storytelling to teach science and engineering. There were three findings in this study. The first was teacher self-efficacy levels may be positively influenced by training. The second research finding was that teachers seek opportunities to be a part of a community in online professional development. Finally, the third finding was that digital storytelling may be used as an instructional strategy to teach the NGSS. The expectation is that the research findings on teacher perceptions will contribute to future design and implementation of online teacher professional development programs.Subjects--Topical Terms:
