Thesis (Ph.D.)--Lehigh University, 2018.
Model Drawing Strategy (MDS) is a multicomponent intervention for teaching fraction word problem solving to students with learning disabilities (LD). MDS includes cognitive strategy steps, instruction in drawing bar diagrams to represent problem scenarios, and elaboration consisting of student explanations of problem solving. This study examined effects of MDS on fraction conceptual development and word problem-solving performance of 4 grade 4 students using a multiple probe across participants design. For two of four students, effects on MDS Steps correct were maintained 2 and 4 weeks after intervention, 2 participants' problem solving explanations improved, and minimal effect was found for Word Problems Correct. Evidence for hypothesized improvement on fraction conceptual understanding from pre to post-test and generalization to solving symbolic fraction number problems was inconclusive. Discussion includes current study's limitations and implications for instruction and future research.
