Thesis (D.B.A.)--Capella University, 2019.
Consumers desire immediate access to information and have the expectation of speed and convenient service. In the global marketplace companies need an optimized end-to-end supply chain to meet consumer needs. This exploratory qualitative single case study focuses on the e-commerce phenomenon to determine if it has widespread influence within the supply chain by exploring the research question: Does an e-commerce supply chain model pressure the traditional supply chain model to possible extinction? The data sources used to examine the research question consisted of one-on-one interviews and secondary industry data. The business problem examines how e-commerce presents companies with strategic business decisions relating to their supply chain. In the current structure the traditional supply chain is unable to initiate e-commerce technologies that are better equipped to meet customer expectations. The purpose of this research was to examine the e-commerce phenomenon through the view of voluntary participants from a single business-to-business company in a southwest-central state operating within a traditional supply chain. The research utilized purposive sampling to identify and select participants who could provide a broad viewpoint of information relating to the given phenomenon. The objective was to contribute to the empirical data regarding e-commerce by examining the literature and data on the differences between traditional and e-commerce supply chain models. The conceptual framework from the literature focused on distinct areas. Four of those areas---Integration, Knowledge Sharing, Supply Chain Management, and Strategy---were instrumental in defining the purpose of this research and became the predetermined topics for interviews and secondary data. The research results indicate the influence of e-commerce will diminish the utilization of the traditional supply chain and contribute to the empirical data by pointing to gaps in the literature. This qualitative research contributes to the literature by addressing changes in the global business climate and how businesses are recognizing the changes in technology as well as how e-commerce technology could be leveraged.
