Thesis (Ph.D.)--Stevens Institute of Technology, 2018.
As organizations embed digital and information technology into their products and processes to turn them into digital service platforms, they require professionals capable of supporting this digital transformation. We explore whether the professionals suited to develop information systems and infrastructures possess the skills to design and build digital ones. This dissertation consists of three essays. First, we analyze skill configurations of process management professionals under stable and unstable regulation and different process automation levels. Second, we analyze skill configurations of technology architects in digital-native and digitally-transformed organizations. Third, we identify rules for the design of digital service platform processes.

We find that when organizations digitally-transform their business they reconfigure their professionals to resemble the configurations in digital-native enterprises. As technology architects disassemble information systems and rebuild them on a digital infrastructure, processes become distributed, algorithmic, and service-oriented. Digital service platforms allow organizations to task their process management professionals with platform adaptation, transferring compliance-enforcing tasks to the platform. The disassembling is complemented by a reconfiguration of the technology architects who become organized into decentralized platform development teams, mirroring the dominant design of digital systems. The five identified design rules provide a modular structure to configure teams around layered processes and platform capabilities, scaling platform evolution. We theorize about these organizational and technological reconfiguration processes which can guide other organizations in the reskilling of their existing process management and technology architecture professionals in support of their digital transformation.
