Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of Hartford, 2018.
The nuanced source history examined in this essay for Bela Bartok's Sonata for Solo Violin (Sz 117/BB 124, 1944) results in nearly every violinist's rendition being constructed from a combination of Yehudi Menuhin's 1947 edition and Peter Bartok's Urtext edition from 1994. In this study, all the autograph sources and relevant letters by Bartok are consulted to clarify the existence of the host of alternative readings, revisions, and unexplained variants. Factors such as Bartok's consultations with violinists Yehudi Menuhin and Rudolf Kolisch, as well as Bartok's untimely death, further contributed to the current lack of a definitive version. The violinist must choose, from the available editions, which version of many passages that they will include in their own rendition without knowing the source or reason for their existence. This essay clarifies which alternatives, from all the sources, are most idiomatic to Bartok's style. A hybrid edition is presented, one that creates a starting point for the violinist, containing versions of passages that suit the style of this piece. Additionally, this edition does not disregard the important editing that was done by Yehudi Menuhin with the composer, and it includes original pitches not contained in either published edition.
