Stereotype discrimination affects female athletes' athletic experiences. Studies have been conducted of former collegiate female athletes' perceptions of the lesbian stereotype found that they were discriminated against because of their sport participation. These limit the recalling of thoughts and experience from the female athletes' playing days. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to determine how stereotype discrimination affects current collegiate female athletes' athletic experiences. A qualitative case study was used for this research because it will aid in the understanding of this complex social phenomenon. Participants consisted of female student-athletes, their coaches, and the athletic directors at a rural, Midwestern, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics institution who volunteered to take part in the study. Results showed that female athletes were greatly affected by the stereotype discrimination of their male counterparts being better athletes and by the lesbian label. The anger and defensiveness caused a negative affect in their athletic participation, as well as their mental well being from having to internalize the discrimination. These athletes were affected in many ways, but their performance and mental health are two main areas of concern. Recommendations for future research in stereotype discrimination and collegiate athletics is needed to help end this discrimination of female athletes and promote a more positive collegiate playing experience for them.
