Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southern Methodist University, 2016.
For decades, direction finding has been an important research topic in many applications such as radar, location services, and medical diagnosis for treatment. For those kinds of applications, the precision of location estimation plays an important role, since that, having a higher precision location estimate method is always desirable. Although there are many ways to achieve high-resolution direction-of-arrival estimation, spatial sensor array signal processing via a subspace-based algorithm, such as Multiple Signal Classicfication (MUSIC), is one of most important techniques that can achieve very high resolution. However, it requires a large number of steering vectors for ne step DOA searching which increases complexity. Moreover, it often is a problem to nd a closed form array response due to the unregulated structure of the array. Beside that, in practical scenarios, there are reasons like shape, size, and other mechanical issues such that well designed regular or symmetric sensor arrays often cannot be mounted in the desired position. When the antenna positions deviate from the places they should be, the array frequency response deviates from the original designed goal too. Because the array response has changed, aliasing and ambiguities may be introduced. Thus, direction estimation can fail due to errors or false alarms.
