Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of West Georgia, 2018.
A core value of the United States was defined long ago within the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence which states that all men are created equal. Until Brown v. Board of Education was decided in 1954, the separate but equal doctrine was applied to education throughout the South, effectively disadvantaging African Americans' educational opportunities. This study investigates the dialectical relationship between education, race, and equality, in Brown and 14 other Supreme Court decisions. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Critical Race Theory (CRT) were used to analyze Supreme Court discourse over six decades in order to determine if African Americans' interest in equal education was ever truly a focal point for the Court.
