Thesis (M.A.C.I.)--Caldwell University, 2018.
This study was designed to determine the extent to which peer conferencing within the Writer's Workshop model helped sixth grade students to improve their argumentative writing. This researcher implemented a variety of data collection instruments to ensure the credibility of the study, including pre and post writing assessments, a Likert Scale survey, an open-ended questionnaire for students and the teacher, and anecdotal notes. The results of this study suggested that peer conferences were helpful during the prewriting stage of close reading stories and mentor text essays and generating ideas and less helpful in the revision stage of the writing process, as students did not respond to one another's writing in a meaningful way. Furthermore, the study indicated that the use of mentor texts in the Writer's Workshop model may have been more decisive than peer conferencing in improving student writing. Thus, peer conferences are one approach that may help to improve argumentative writing when students have been taught how to provide effective feedback.
