Thesis (M.A.)--Pacifica Graduate Institute, 2018.
This thesis seeks to deconstruct the discursive field of sex/pornography addiction and hypersexuality. A hermeneutic methodology inflected by poststructuralist theory and cultural history is utilized in an effort to explore the discursive threads central to contemporary conceptualizations of so-called sex addiction including an attention to sexual excess and moral--physiological degeneracy, fears connected to the proliferation of disruptive media technologies, and concerns about how the sexualities of particular genders destabilize social cohesion and constitute a danger to public health. These discursive threads are traced back to some of their first elaborations within the Western European Enlightenment. This research ultimately seeks to challenge therapists to abandon the pathologizing, totalizing narratives offered by the sex addiction industry in favor of person-, principle-, process-, and pleasure-centered approaches.
