This thesis is primarily an attempt to reconstruct and analyse the actual process of the formation of the Chinese Communist ideology from 1920 to 1928.

In examining the intellectual background in China prior to the emergence of Communism, the thesis suggests that although Marxian theories deeply influenced the outlook of Chinese intellectuals on history and society during 1918-20, they failed to convince them of the viability of class struggle as a means to achieve socialism. It was not until mid-1920 that some intellectuals began to really accept the "Russian Way." In the next year, Leninism made a true impact on Chinese politics by providing the Chinese Communists with a set of particular viewpoints on politics and revolution. An emerging concept of orthodoxy in support of the Leninist interpretation of Marxism set the CCP's ideological development firmly toward the direction of bolshevization.

The thesis studies four important themes of the ideology, namely, the revolutionary model, Chinese society, China's relations with the outside world, and the party. The evolution of the CCP's revolutionary model witnessed an early attempt to search for a minimum programme and the later replacement of it by a medium programme. Each programme involved many aspects of ideological developments and strategic and tactical considerations. It argues that there was a stronger Chinese initiative in the formulation of the party's policies than is generally assumed, and that the Communist movement as a whole was marked by strong voluntarist and populist conceptions and sentiments. In addition, it examines the Communists' attempts to analyze Chinese society and classes, and their visions of the world order and China's place in it. It finally discusses the CCP's subscription to the Leninist concepts of the party and party building.

In the discussion of the development of each theme, particular attention is paid to the interactions between theory and practice, and the types of Bolshevik doctrines that had been important to the shaping of the Chinese Communist mind. The tensions between western theories and the particularist demands of the Chinese situation, as well as the efforts of the Chinese Communists to resolve them, are also analysed.
