The prevalence of obesity in the United States is on the rise despite the existence of several evidenced-based weight management programs. Implementing programs into the clinical setting can be a challenge for providers. The aim of this evidenced-based pilot study was to improve the health of adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater, by implementing a lifestyle intervention program through provider education to decrease BMI. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP) guidelines were utilized to achieve a decrease in BMI. This program was initially a research study supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to prevent diabetes in obese participants and showed lifestyle changes can be effective in losing weight and preventing type 2 diabetes. This pilot study was conducted in a primary care setting. Participants included obese adults 18 years and older, providers, medical assistants and the Doctor of Nursing Practice candidate. A sample of 23 adults with a BMI of 30 or greater received education on lifestyle interventions utilizing the concept of AcceptanceBased Behavior Therapy (ABBT). ABBT is a psychologically based theory which focuses on mindfulness, acceptance, and identifying behaviors that are meaningful to patients (HayesSkelton, Orsillo, & Roemer, 2013). Results of this project showed significant decrease in variables examined and 29% of participants lost more than the set goal of 7% of their initial weight. Lifestyle interventions along with ABBT utilized in this project were adaptable for some participants and proved one's willingness to make modifications to habits such as eating, physical activity, and self-monitoring can effect change in weight, BMI, waist circumference and waist-to-hip measurements.
