The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to investigate the community collaborative court judge's communication style during procedural justice and its role in reducing recidivism amongst African American mentally ill criminal offenders. In this study, procedural justice is examined through the framework of therapeutic jurisprudence theory. A case study was conducted with 12 offenders to assess the research questions posed. Eight broad themes emerged when evaluating the overall impression of communication effectiveness during court hearings, the majority of which reflect the strengths that were noted in communication. The number one impression was that rapport appeared to be established between the judge and the defendant, a theme that emerged many times throughout the six-month observation period. The only somewhat negative observations were of brief communication and a lack of in-depth questioning of the defendant, but each of these observations was only made once. The overall impressions were overwhelmingly positive in nature.

The majority of defendants had only one charge during their first mental health court hearing (n = 10, 83.3%), with only two defendants having two charges each (n = 2, 16.7%). All defendants included in the sample (n = 12, 100%) were present in the courtroom during their initial court appearance. During the initial court appearance, all defendants were in the JDI group (n = 12, 100%), with none in the JC group (n = 0, 0%). In June, three defendants were in the JC group; one of these defendants had new charges brought in May, and one had new charges brought in June. In total, eight defendants ( n = 8, 66.7%) were in the JC group at least once during the six-month period.
