Thesis (D.B.A.)--University of Phoenix, 2017.
This qualitative, transcendental phenomenological study involved exploring the lived experiences of eight employees who were victims of cyberbullying in the workplace. Research was lacking and a gap exist in knowledge regarding a general understanding of the lived experience, meaning, and essence of being an employee who has been a victim of cyberbullying in the workplace. The focus of this research was on exploring the psychological and physiological impacts on the victims and how they coped with the cyberbullying. The participants shared their experiences in depth through semistructured, face-to-face interviews with open-ended questions. The data were analyzed using Moustakas's modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen approach for phenomenological analysis. The data analysis resulted in the identification of four themes: (a) stress, embarrassment, and anger; (b) support and well-being; (c) self-esteem and trust; and (d) motivation and coping. The essence of the participants' lived experiences was that of self-preservation from workplace cyber intimidation and abuse. The research findings are beneficial for business leaders, helping them to increase their awareness of cyberbullying in the workplace, the psychological and physiological impacts on victims, and how victims coped with the phenomenon. The research results indicated that business leaders should support victims by creating antibullying policies and mandatory employee education to increase awareness of and reduce the prevalence of cyberbullying in the workplace. Further qualitative and quantitative research are needed to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of cyberbullying in the workplace, including among different populations of employees. The current study has narrowed the gap in the literature and resulted in greater understanding of cyberbullying in the workplace.
