Thesis (M.A.)--San Diego State University, 2018.
This study examines the phenomenon of social networking sites (SNSs) within the context of interpersonal relationship development and dissolution. There is limited researcher exploring individuals' specific motivations for initiating the friending or unfriending of others. This study explores (1) the potential associations between the motives for friending and unfriending others and (2) the possible associations between the traits of the dark triad of personality (narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy) and the friending motives. The results of this study suggest that there is an association between the anti-social, insecure, and sociable friending and unfriending motives. Additionally, the results show an association between the dark triad traits with the anti-social, insecure, and inspiration friending motives.
