Thesis (M.A.)--Regent University, 2017.
The problem of cyberbullying among adolescents in the educational setting has been a growing concern for many. While scholars have addressed the problem in various ways, the question of underreporting of cyberbullying incidents has seldom been the focus of studies. This study explores the underreporting of cyberbullying and reasons why a student or bystander may not report cyberbullying. The study is framed by the fairness heuristic theory, gauging students' trust level of the court system, law enforcement and school administration in the handling of cyberbullying cases as a determining factor in whether to report to one of these three institutions or others. It was found that gender does not have a statistical influence on likelihood to report, that the fairness heuristic theory may have no bearing on students' willingness to report and that bystander reporting of incidents may be more prevalent than previous studies purport.
