Thesis (M.S.)--Utica College, 2017.
Small businesses are under attack. Research shows that nearly half of all small and medium businesses (SMBs) were victims of a cyberattack in 2016. This statistic represents a sharp increase from 2011 when only 15% of SMBs indicated that they had been breached. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that contribute to the targeting of small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) by cybercriminals. To achieve its purpose, the study examined the threats and threat actors associated with cyberattacks, case studies of actual cyberattacks, and the impact of the underground economy on cybercrime. In addition, this paper leveraged survey data to understand differences between how SMBs and larger firms implement security controls, which could also influence how attackers select their targets. After reviewing the research, this project identified opportunities for SMBs to improve their security postures and suggestions for policymakers to implement strategic controls that will improve the prevention and survivability of cyberattacks against SMBs.
