Thesis (M.A.)--Notre Dame de Namur University, 2018.
The following negative constructs are highly referenced in literature written on the implications to the helping professional working in the field of trauma: vicarious trauma, secondary traumatic stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Practicing clinically while experiencing symptomology of these negative constructs can compromise the quality of one's work (Iqbal, 2015; Katsounari, 2015; Killian, 2008; Lachman, 2016). This lead Hernandez, Gangsei, and Engstrom (2007) to research positive constructs of working in the field of trauma; thereby developing the notion of vicarious resilience. This research asked if a Jungian art therapy directive could promote vicarious resilience. Seventy- three adults, who volunteered to work with abused children, were given the opportunity to participate in an art therapy directive. A quantitative analysis compared participants' scores on the following pretest and posttest measures: The Vicarious Resilience Scale, Resilience Short Scale, and Inner Strength Scale. Statistical analysis showed statistically significant increases in all three measures. This research demonstrated that the implementation of an art therapy directive can promote vicarious resilience in adults working with abused children.
