Thesis (M.A.)--Notre Dame de Namur University, 2017.
The purpose of this mixed methods, art-based pilot study was to investigate the effectiveness of narrative art therapy drawing techniques with a normative adult population for developing identity functions and self-esteem. Data were gathered from 10 participants via an online survey tool including scores from two self-report measures, the Functions of Identity Scale (FIS) and the Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), as well as uploaded images of participant's drawings and written reflection questions about the creative process. Descriptive statistics revealed an overall increase in FIS scores for all participants. Only 50% of participants (n = 5) had an increase in RSE scores following the intervention. Template analysis was utilized to gather qualitative themes from 25 drawings and corresponding written reflections. Although quantitative results were inconclusive, qualitative inquiry revealed several themes within the artwork and positive trends towards self-awareness, empowerment, and meaning-making. Participants also reported insight, emotional shifts, and enjoyment from the process.
