Thesis (M.S.)--Pepperdine University, 2017.
In the Information Age, telecommuting has gained attention as a flexible albeit nontraditional way of working. Telecommuting changes the social context or the individual's environment, and thus changes how individuals identify with their organization. This study investigated the strength of organizational identification in telecommuters (individuals who work in a nontraditional or virtual environment) and assessed the focus or target of their identification. The study looked at three targets of identification: organizational, workgroup/work team, and occupation. Using a mixed methods design, virtual interviews were conducted and survey data were gathered from a total of 14 participants. The findings in this study suggest that telecommuters have stronger identification with their work team and their occupation than their organization, which is consistent with findings in prior research on traditional in-office workers. The findings in this study add to current research on organizational identification in telecommuters and provide recommendations for future research.
