I examined 439 Formosan Reeves' muntjacs in a game-shop serving the study area during December 1988 and January 1989, and collected data from a captive population in the Taipei Zoo from August 1988 to September 1989. Polyestrus females ovulated around 5 months old and perhaps even earlier, but the first two or more ovulations may be infertile. Post-conception and post-partum estri were evident, and the ovarian cycle may persist throughout pregnancy. Although more than one ovum may be released during each estrus cycle, a single fawn and unilateral implantation in the right horn seems to be the rule.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Testes of males older than 11 months were fully active, but no animals younger than 7 months produced spermatozoa. Males produce sperm and probably are fertile at all stages in the antler cycle. Male's upper canines grow rapidly until 2-3 years of age. Adult males were commonly found with broken upper canines. Adult males cast antlers during April-May and shed velvet from August to September. Data suggested calves born during October-January acquired their first set of antlers at their first August-September, while others did not form antlers until their second August-September.

Growth of the mandibular diastema showed no difference between males and females, and the final length was reached shortly after 1 year of age. Body growth ceased at about 2 years of age in females, while males continued to grow after that. Adult males are significantly heavier than adult females (mean = 8.3 vs. 6.8 kg). The heavier body weight is considered a reflection of the dominant status of males over females.

Births apparently occurred every month of the year with one peak during June-August, 1988, and two less pronounced peaks during March-May, 1987, and November 1987-January 1988. The intervals between these peaks (i.e. 7 and 8 months) coincided with the gestation period for the species, suggesting the population might experience a partially synchronized sub-annual ($<$12 months) breeding cycle. The sub-annual cycle was probably created by the heavy trapping during winter in the study area.
