Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Irvine, 1982.
The purpose of this study is to uncover the social history of a nineteenth century Chinese American community and to determine the adaptive strategies used by its members to insure their survival. This study departs from previous work in Chinese American history by investigating the fabric of community life of Chinese Americans rather than that of Anglo exclusionists. The findings of this study challenge previous concepts of Chinese Americans as docile, obsequious, non-participating members of the American society. The history of Chinese Americans in Los Angeles is one of active resistance to discrimination and exclusion. This study investigates the character of Chinese American expressions of resistance. It demonstrates that Chinese Americans were an integral component of the Southern California community. Furthermore, it was the extensive level of their participation in the greater community that was responsible for periodic surges in the anti-Chinese movement rather than their alleged threat to the California economy and refusal to participate in the society. There are five major parts of the study: (1) Chinese American settlement patterns, (2) Chinese American influence on the character of the anti-Chinese movement, (3) the impact of the occupational structure of Chinese Americans on Anglo-Chinese American relations, (4) the impact of organized religion on Chinese American community development, and (5) the role of Chinese American women in the development of community sensibilities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
