This exploratory descriptive study was designed to ascertain the nature and needs of one early group of scholars and students from the People's Republic of China with a view toward encouraging and supporting a successful educational experience in the United States. Specifically, this investigation attempted to: (1) present a profile of their backgrounds and characteristics in an attempt to personalize a group of people who have been isolated from the United States for almost 30 years. (2) examine their on- and off-campus worlds and identify the supports and services being provided or which need to be provided to augment their educational and cross-cultural experiences here. (3) strengthen overall Sino-American relationships by examining (a) the nature of institutional and individual ties established with potential influential leaders of China and (b) their reported impressions of the United States.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The subjects of the study were 40 students and scholars holding a passport from the People's Republic of China who had been in the United States no less than six months and no more than two and one-half years, and who were currently studying at either Drexel University, Temple University, University of Pennsylvania or Burlington Community College. Sixty-six and six tenths percent (66.6%) of the total population participated in the study.
520 $a The data for this investigation was collected by use of an indepth two-hour interview conducted by the researcher during the summer of 1981 utilizing a translator in 60 percent of the interviews. Data are reported in the form of frequency counts, related statistics and cross tabulation tables. Where appropriate, the relationship of particular variables are indicated.
520 $a Most Chinese students and scholars are generally satisfied with their educational programs in the United States and many have already made contributions to campus research and authored significant articles and conference papers. The data indicate that respondents saw their limited ability to speak and understand English as a serious handicap in their academic work, an impediment to interaction with people of their host country, a deterrant to attending cultural events, a handicap in reading newspapers and as fostering feelings of exclusion. . . .
