Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Binghamton, 2018.
In this paper, I mainly put my focus on the discussion of Chinese shamanism. Concerning the relation between the Song government and shamans, Professor TJ Hinrichs reveals an external intention of the long-term anti-shaman movements in the Song dynasty. Promoters of medical knowledge urged the government to transform local shamans into healers under their own supervision. However, based on my research, in addition to the consideration of medical policies, the potential for economic profit also serves to explain why the government sought to intervene in the activities of shamans. Robert Hymes (2015) particularly stresses the influence of commercialization and marketization, which reconstructed the ideas and popular values of the Song society.

Professor Davis analyzes the complicated conditions within which the different religions influenced each other. He distinguishes the original source of overlapping parts and mainly focuses on the rituals and religious texts. I follow his keen thought and put my research emphasis on the shamanic elements in different religions. Perhaps the emergence of new gender recognition in Song medicine also greatly influenced the supernatural world. Thus female shamans were also inevitably limited to particular fields or activities.
