Research has consistently established that women with disabilities experience intimate partner violence (IPV) at higher rates than women without disabilities, as well as men with disabilities. Despite the magnitude of the problem, research addressing the experiences of survivors of IPV with disabilities is limited, particularly inquiry contributing to theoretical explanations for the heightened rates of IPV against women with disabilities. The lack of a strong theoretical base impedes understanding of the problem and thus hinders the development of disability-relevant IPV prevention and programming efforts, policy, and research.

This qualitative study empirically investigates accounts of IPV among women with disabilities to develop a theoretical framework for understanding this problem. Grounded theory analysis of 25 semi-structured interviews with women with physical disabilities and/or pain conditions receiving services from an IPV agency serving women with disabilities was conducted to explore their experiences. The process of searching for a way out of IPV proved central to the experiences of the women interviewed, and from this core theme a grounded theory centered around the concept of empowerment emerged. As study participants searched for a way out of IPV, the path out was most often facilitated by a process of empowerment. A disability-affirmative framework of empowerment for survivors with disabilities allows strengths to be enhanced, vulnerabilities to acknowledged, and resources and supports to be cultivated to promote interdependence. The implications of the dissertation's findings are discussed in terms of practice, policy, and research on IPV among women with disabilities.
