Background: Climate change and pollution generated from the health care sector impose significant public health burdens. Health professionals have a role to play in addressing these health impacts through resource conservation and pollution prevention within their professional practice. Previous studies have examined physician attitudes towards climate change and health. Objective: This study aims to assess medical, nursing and physician assistant student knowledge and attitudes regarding climate change, pollution from the health care sector, and professional responsibility for resource conservation within professional practice. Methods: Medical, nursing, and physician assistant students at Yale University were surveyed. Results: The results of this study suggest that medical, nursing, and physician assistant students are engaged with the concept of resource conservation and pollution prevention in clinical practice, but require improved education and institutional support for systems and practices that improve resource conservation in order to effectively take responsibility as environmental stewards in the health care sector. Conclusion: There is a need for health professional education on climate change, health sector pollution and resource conservation. In order for this education to be effective, increased industry support of resource conservation and pollution prevention by means of industry transparency on the environmental footprint of the health care sector and research regarding the environmental footprint of specific clinical practices will be required.
