Inhabitants of Western cultures are highly exposed to media, susceptible to internalization of a thin-ideal and research suggests that culture plays a large part in the effects media has on body image satisfaction and eating disorder (ED) risk. However, very little research has focused on the differences among western cultures similarly exposed to media. The current study aimed to compare ED risk, internalization of a thin-ideal, body related anxiety, mindfulness, and body mass index (BMI) among U.S. and Italian college students using archival data. Male and female participants completed the Eating Disorder Inventory, third edition (EDI-3), Physical Appearance Comparison Scale (PACS), Physical Appearance State and Trait Anxiety Scale (PASTAS), Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ), and Social Attitudes Toward Appearance Questionnaire (SATAQ-3). Results indicated that thin ideal internalization, eating disorder risk, body related anxiety, and BMI were higher in the U.S. sample overall. U.S. women had higher rates of thin ideal internalization and eating disorder risk than Italian women, and U.S. men were more at risk than Italian men in these areas. Interestingly however, U.S. men had significantly higher body related anxiety than Italian men, while there was no significant difference between U.S. versus Italian women. This suggests that the higher overall body related anxiety scores in the U.S. versus Italy in the results can be attributed mostly to this difference in terms of U.S. men. Furthermore, there were significant differences between Italian men and women with women showing significantly higher body related anxiety than Italian men. In terms of BMI, the U.S. sample had significantly higher BMI than the Italian sample with U.S. men and Italian men having higher BMIs than U.S. and Italian women respectively. Interestingly, no differences were found between men and women overall or in each country on eating disorder risk, suggesting that men as just as at risk as women.
