本書追溯北宋末年靖康之難的完整歷史細節, 講述宋、遼、金三方的和與戰, 聚焦北宋歷史大變局的關鍵時刻, 以及帝國由內而外全局性危局大爆發的前因後果。北宋宣和年間, 帝國上下一片繁榮景象, 然而盛世之下的隱患已成暗湧。財政困難、軍事痼疾、惡性黨爭等內部危機, 北方遼、金兩國的軍事威脅等外部危機, 使得帝國漸成風雨飄搖之勢。為"收復"作為戰略屏障的燕雲十六州, 宋徽宗決定聯金滅遼。宋金聯盟雖然逐漸將遼國蠶食, 但金國借此窺見北宋的虛弱, 加之兩國複雜的利益糾紛, 金國轉而南下攻宋。靖康元年(1126), 金軍第二次圍攻汴京, 十一月汴京城陷。北宋轟然崩潰, 從盛世到滅亡僅隔三年。
