Thesis (M.M.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2010.
The author explores the relationship between the guitar and orchestra. Two modern guitar concerti: To the Edge of Dream, by Toru Takemitsu---for classical guitar, and Tuck and Roll, by Steven Mackey---for electric guitar, are analyzed. The author compares how the guitar is used within an orchestral context in his original concerto Vs., with the Takemitsu and Mackey concerti. Vs. is unique in that it requires the use of a classical, electric hollow-body and electric solid-body guitar. Also included is a harmonic, form, and rhythmic analysis of Vs..
