Virtual or digital microscopy has initiated changes that reflect how education and training are being implemented within the diagnostic medical field and science courses, widening an opportunity for curriculum changes that incorporate the use of microscopy techniques that align with current medical laboratories microscopic technologies. As medical laboratory science programs revise their current curriculum, innovative teaching methodology and technology become the center of attention as they increase the learning experiences for all learners within these programs. Despite quantitative studies that identify the utilization of virtual microscopy as an assessment for grade improvement, little is known about the experiences that students in an academic medical science program encounter as part of their learning experience. The current basic qualitative research study used semistructured, open-ended telephone and face-to-face interviews to obtain the data from students currently enrolled in a medical laboratory science program at a Southern college. Findings for this basic qualitative research study revealed participants' responses that favored virtual microscopy instruction and training instead of the golden standard of traditional microscopy techniques. Although participants preferred virtual microscopy over traditional microscopy, they agreed that traditional microscopy should continue as adjuvant training in their clinical laboratory courses. Additionally, participants recommended a curriculum change that reflects microscopy techniques that are currently being used in the clinical and anatomical laboratories, therefore adding to the future of health care education.
