Thesis (M.S.)--University of Colorado at Denver, 2018.
For the live music observer, there is often a disconnect between visualizations and the performer. Music venues and nightclubs often use pre-programmed lights and videos, or an additional VJ performer, for visual stimulation during the music performance. Using this automated strategy, or multiple DJ/VJ performers, creates a detachment between the audience and the performer. This technical detachment can be distracting for patrons that are intently following the musical performance. In an effort to give artists another option for controlling visualizations, I designed and built an integrated and efficient live music/visualization performance environment, using affordable technology and open source software, that can be performed from one modest computer. This integrated design intricately coordinates the visualizations with the music and is controlled by the performer in real-time. Functionality of the environment includes real time control using external controllers, reactive control using a microphone or audio effects, and specific control using automation from specific sounds within the music performance. By incorporating direct and automated control into the system, I established a technique that is functional and fun to play. Using technology and innovative design, I've introduced a viable option for artists to express themselves musically and visually, immersing the audience in an interactive and dynamic musical experience, controlled exclusively by the artist, using one computer.
